Paprika Recipe Manager Privacy Policy
I've recently gone down a few rabbit holes around iPhone to Android switch and then today I went down a Paprika vs Mela one. I ended up purchasing both Paprika apps for iOS and Mac and started tinkering around and reading thoughts on Reddit.
I came across a couple of posts about how Paprika is a nightmare for privacy. All I could think to myself was "how bad could it possibly be" and went and looked at the Privacy Policy.
Let me be clear: it's an insane policy for a recipe app. It's extremely broad, links and ads clicked on are not covered by the policy, and the weird clause about age...I was shocked.
Ran this through Claude to get a summary, and this is what Claude gave back:
Major Overreaches:
Collects postal addresses and phone numbers (unnecessary for recipe app) Has broad access to device files and photos beyond recipe needs Shares data with undefined "subsidiaries and affiliates" Allows behavioral advertising tracking No clear data retention or deletion policies
š± Excessive Data Collection:
Mobile network information Traffic data and communication logs Broad device metadata access Multiple tracking technologies (web beacons, cookies) IP addresses and detailed device identifiers
š¤ Concerning Sharing Practices:
Broad rights to share with contractors and service providers Can transfer all user data if company is sold Allows multiple third-party analytics companies to collect data No clear limits on how third parties can use the data No protection guarantees for shared family recipes
Quickly submitted a request for refund to Apple and went with Mela. Want to know Melas privacy policy?
Mela does not collect any data. If iCloud Sync is enabled, your data is stored securely in a private container in your iCloud account. Mela does not depend on or use any third-party service.
